![]() If you see only two weights, your browser does not handle font-weight properly. Segoe UI has four weights, and Helvetica Neue five. Test caseįor the test case I use Segoe UI for Windows and Helvetica Neue for Mac. Few fonts support all nine weights, although some support four or five.įont-weight: 400 is supposed to be equal to normal, while 700 is equal to bold.įinally there are the relative values bolder and lighter that make a bit of text one step bolder or lighter than the default weight (which in turn depends on the absolute font-weight value you defined). They’re supposed to give nine different weights, from very light to very bold. But with the introduction of the Retina Display, Apple switched to the slightly more refined Helvetica Neue. ![]() When the iPhone was first introduced, it used plain old Helvetica as the system font. ![]() Back to fonts, to compensate for my rude sidetracking - standard Mac systems from OS 9.x onwards (probably only 1 or less of all Mac users are still on anything below 9, and most have converted to 10 by now) all have Trebuchet, Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial, etc. If you’re the adventurous sort, you can use the 100-900 values. The fact is, Helvetica Neue has been the iOS system font ever since the introduction of the iPhone 4. Unless thats Johnny Depps backside, ian, I regret to say I cant vote for it. If you want a completely safe weight, just use font-weight: bold and accept anything the browser gives you. If it has none you cannot make it bold at all. The problem here is that the font itself must have one or more weights. Subtle compatibility problem: exactly where in the 100-900 range does lighter start to generate bold text?įont-weight is meant for setting the weight (boldness) of the font.
